SRP Powering Our Future Mini-Grant
I attended the SRP Powering Our Future training and will be receiving the $350 mini-grant. The email that I sent to Alison Smith the program coordinator is below. My funding has been approved!
Ms. Smith,
Hello, My name is Julia Szabo and I am a 5th grade math and science teacher at Discovery School in Glendale. I attended your Powering Our Future workshop on September 24th and am currently planning my Alternate Energy Sources Unit.
I will be combining several of the modules with my students, focusing on the alternate energy sources presented in the E-Journeys. I plan to combine our study of solar power with our next unit on simple machines. After our E-Journey and our introduction to simple machines we will create the wind wheels (6-8 Module, Unit 2, Lesson 3) and water wheel (6-8 Module, Unit 3, Lesson 3) in the modules. These will give my students a hands-on understanding of the way that simple machines allow wind and hydropower. I plan to buy a set of solar cars for us to create to give them further application with solar cells and simple machines. I will use the grant buy the supplies for the wind and water wheels at home depot or Walmart and the website for the solar cars is below. http://sunwindsolar.com/solar_sales_us/products.php?p=ad90eb534f
All of these activities will give students an opportunity to see the way energy is created through the use of simple machines. I am very excited for this wonderful bridge between our units on alternate energy and simple machines.
