About Me
My name is Julia Szabo and I am a 5th grade math and science teacher at Discovery School in Glendale, Arizona. I was born in Houston, Texas but raised in Lawrence, Kansas - the only liberal town in Kansas and the home of the University of Kansas. I moved to Arizona in June 2010 through Teacher for America after studying Latin American Political Science at Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont.
During college I was a legal advocate for women and children experiencing domestic violence in Vermont and Baltimore and after graduating I moved to Washington, DC and worked as an investigator at the DC Public Defender Service. In DC I investigated on behalf of men and women who were incarcerated due to parole violations. The problems faced by my clients in both of these legal roles left me wanting to make an impact before these individuals were in the situations they were in. Education presented an exciting opportunity for me to join a more hopeful profession where I could make a positive impact in the lives of children.
Last year I taught a self-contained 4th/5th grade class (they are in the photo above). This year we decided to departmentalize so I am teaching math to the entire 5th grade. I also teach science and reading intervention to my lovely homeroom class. My students are amazing and I am excited for a wonderful year with my mathematicians.
